Event Types

In the Game of Magic The Gathering there are 11 different types of events. 
Those type are:

PRERELEASES

Prereleases celebrate the arrival of each major Magic release. These events are your chance to see the newest cards, and your first chance to play with them before the set is released. Prereleases provide you with the earliest possible opportunity to play with the newest cards in Magic. Prereleases are enjoyable casual events that encourage fun over competition. You can plan to play all day in multiple events your store runs, or drop by for a single event. Be sure to check with your local store to see if you need to preregister!


FRIDAY NIGHT MAGIC

Play Magic with friends, win prizes, and enjoy the thrill of competition. What are you doing Friday night? Friday Night Magic is offered in a variety of great, easy-to-get into formats. Whether you like to build your own deck and bring it the event or play from a limited pool of cards when you get there, you’ll be sure to find a format that’s right for you. Some stores even offer Two-Headed Giant, where you can play with a friend. Double the carnage, double the fun! Stores can run Friday Night Magic events as any format. Check with your local store to see what people will be playing, then show up and have fun! Looking to play a specific format? MAGIC GAME DAY

 
Does the opportunity to test your skill against your local community, win game day prizes, and stamp your name as your local champion appeal to you? Then Magic Game Day is for you! Magic Game Day events are one-day tournaments using the Standard format. These tournaments are held at local game and hobby stores three weeks after a new set becomes available for purchase. Game Day events provide a great way for players to see how the newest set has impacted the shape of Standard.See how you match up against your local community, earn prizes, and become a champion in this unique day of competition taking place all around the world! Magic Game Day is an exciting opportunity for players around the world to join in playing Standard in their local communities with the newest cards Magic has to offer on a global scale.

GRAND PRIX

Grand Prix are the ultimate Magic experience. These three-day events, held all around the globe, feature a wide array of side events, card dealers, artists, and a two-day main event with thousands of dollars on the line. It’s a festival of Magic unlike anything else. Grand Prix are the biggest open Magic events run around the world. These exciting three-day festivals of all that is Magic feature a two-day main event with thousands of dollars in cash prizes. Plus, you’ll find artist signings and more side events than you could possibly play in your most fevered Magic-induced dreams.

Want to hit the ground running at your next Grand Prix? Find a Grand Prix Trial at a local store near you and earn a two-round bye to be used at the associated Grand Prix. Grand Prix are the biggest open Magic events run around the world. These exciting three-day festivals of all that is Magic feature a two-day main event with thousands of dollars in cash prizes. Plus, you’ll find artist signings and more side events than you could possibly play in your most fevered Magic-induced dreams.
Get a leg up at your next Grand Prix by competing in Grand Prix Trials (GPT). These tournaments
are run by independent stores around the world and award a two-round bye to a Grand Prix, giving you a head start on the competition with two free wins to start the tournament.

PRO TOUR

Compete against the greatest Magic players around the globe for your share of a $250,000 prize purse. Pro Tours are the ultimate test of your skill as a Magic player. The players who have the most advanced understanding of Magic will have the best chance to succeed. Maybe one day your name will be atop the field at a future Pro Tour!


PRELIMINARY PRO TOUR QUALIFIERS

Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifiers (PPTQs) are the first step for new players on their path to the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour. Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifiers (PPTQs) are the first step for new players on their path to the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour. By winning a Preliminary PTQ, you will qualify for that season’s Regional Pro Tour Qualifier (RPTQ). Over 3,000 Wizards Play Network locations worldwide have the opportunity to host one Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier each season. With so many stores running these events each season, finding one near you will be easy!

REGIONAL PRO TOUR QUALIFIERS

Regional Pro Tour Qualifiers (RPTQs) are your chance to play on the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour! Top finishers at a Regional PTQ will receive an invitation – and airfare – to the Pro Tour that it qualifies for! Regional Pro Tour Qualifiers (RPTQs) are your chance to play on the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour! Top finishers at a Regional PTQ will receive an invitation – and airfare – to the Pro Tour that it qualifies for! Regional Pro Tour Qualifiers take place about 4-6 weeks after the end of a Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier season.

WORLD MAGIC CUP

With teams of four representing more than 70 countries, the World Magic Cup is like no other tournament on the planet! Fame, glory, and a year’s worth of the ultimate bragging rights await the team that can navigate multiple formats over several days to claim the World Magic Cup.The World Magic Cup is an annual Magic event, gathering representatives from nations all over the world to compete in a unique team format for the ultimate national bragging rights. Teams of four, representing more than 70 countries, face off every year over a multi-day, multi-format event to crown the World Magic Cup Champion
